Installing CC Security Essentials

CC Security Essentials installs like any other WordPress plugin and doesn’t require any special server configuration.

The plugin is designed to work with a standard WordPress installation and integrates naturally with the WordPress administration interface.

No accounts need to be created, and the plugin doesn’t require any external services or third-party connections.

Installing from the WordPress Plugin Directory

If you’re installing CC Security Essentials from the WordPress Plugin Directory:

Sign in to your WordPress administration area.
Navigate to Plugins → Add New.
Search for CC Security Essentials.
Select Install Now.
Once installation is complete, click Activate.

After activation, a new CC Security Essentials menu will appear in the WordPress administration menu.

Installing from a ZIP File

If you’ve downloaded the plugin as a ZIP file:

Navigate to Plugins → Add New Plugin.
Click Upload Plugin.
Choose the downloaded ZIP file.
Click Install Now.
When installation finishes, click Activate Plugin.

Minimum Requirements

CC Security Essentials follows the current WordPress requirements wherever possible.

You’ll generally need:

A supported version of WordPress
PHP 7.4 or later (or the minimum version required by the current release)
Administrator access to the website

Refer to the plugin’s readme or WordPress.org listing for the latest supported versions.

What Happens After Activation?

After activation, CC Security Essentials immediately begins analysing your website’s current security configuration.

Importantly, the plugin does not automatically make security-related changes to your website.

Instead, it:

reviews your current configuration
identifies areas that may benefit from improvement
explains each recommendation
allows you to decide which protections are appropriate for your website

This approach helps ensure that changes are made deliberately and with a clear understanding of their potential impact.

Your First Steps

After activating the plugin, we recommend working through the following sequence.

1. Review Security Health

Begin by opening Security Health.

This provides an overview of your website’s current security posture and highlights recommendations that may improve protection.

Don’t worry if your website doesn’t receive a perfect score immediately—the recommendations are intended to guide you, not to suggest that your website is unsafe.

2. Read the Security Guide

Before enabling any protections, spend a few minutes reading the Security Guide.

Each recommendation explains:

what the feature does
why it may be useful
when it should be enabled
any considerations before making changes

Understanding the purpose of a feature is usually more valuable than simply enabling it.

3. Configure Suitable Protections

Every website is different.

Some recommendations are appropriate for almost every WordPress website, while others depend on how your website is used.

Choose the protections that best match your own requirements.

4. Verify Your Protection

Where verification is available, use it.

Verification confirms that your website is actually behaving as expected rather than assuming a setting has taken effect.

This provides additional confidence that your chosen protections are working correctly.

5. Review Periodically

Security isn’t something that should only be considered once.

As your website grows, installs new plugins, changes themes or introduces new functionality, it’s worth reviewing your security configuration from time to time.

Installing CC Security Essentials Pro

If you purchase CC Security Essentials Pro, it installs alongside the core plugin rather than replacing it.

Simply:

Install CC Security Essentials.
Install CC Security Essentials Pro.
Activate both plugins.

The Pro plugin automatically extends the functionality of the core plugin, adding additional security capabilities while preserving the familiar interface.

Updating the Plugin

Updates can be installed using the standard WordPress update process.

Before installing updates, we recommend:

creating a recent website backup
ensuring WordPress itself is up to date
checking that any required PHP version is supported

Keeping plugins updated is an important part of maintaining a secure WordPress website.

Uninstalling

If you decide to remove CC Security Essentials:

Deactivate the plugin.
Delete it using the WordPress Plugins screen.

The plugin also provides uninstall options that allow you to control whether plugin settings are removed when the plugin is deleted.

If you intend to reinstall the plugin later, you may prefer to retain your configuration.

Troubleshooting Installation

The plugin won’t install

Check that:

the ZIP file hasn’t been extracted before uploading
your WordPress and PHP versions meet the minimum requirements
you have sufficient administrator permissions

I can’t see the plugin menu

Ensure the plugin has been successfully activated.

Only users with the appropriate administrator capabilities can access the plugin settings.

I already use another security plugin

CC Security Essentials is designed to work alongside many other WordPress plugins.

However, some security plugins may provide similar functionality, such as disabling XML-RPC or restricting REST API access.

If two plugins attempt to control the same feature, unexpected behaviour may occur. Where possible, avoid enabling duplicate security measures across multiple plugins.
