Disable Comments

Last updated: 10th July 2026 for CC Security Essentials version 1.0

What Does This Feature Do?

The Disable Comments feature allows you to prevent visitors from posting comments on your website.

Depending on your configuration, you can disable comments across your entire website or only for selected types of content.

The feature also removes unnecessary comment functionality from WordPress where appropriate, helping to simplify administration and reduce potential avenues for spam.

Why Would I Disable Comments?

Comments are an important feature for some websites, but they’re unnecessary for many others.

If your website never invites public discussion, leaving comments enabled provides little benefit while increasing ongoing administration.

Disabling comments can help to:

  • reduce comment spam
  • minimise moderation work
  • simplify the WordPress administration area
  • reduce unnecessary functionality
  • improve the overall security posture of your website

For many business websites, comments simply aren’t needed.

When Should I Disable Comments?

Disabling comments is often appropriate for:

  • business websites
  • company websites
  • brochure websites
  • portfolio websites
  • landing pages
  • documentation websites
  • product catalogues

If visitors are never expected to leave comments, disabling the feature usually makes sense.

When Should I Leave Comments Enabled?

Some websites rely heavily on visitor interaction.

You may wish to keep comments enabled if you operate:

  • a personal blog
  • a news website
  • an educational website
  • a community website
  • a magazine
  • any website that encourages public discussion

Comments remain an important part of WordPress for many publishers.

Existing Comments

Disabling comments does not automatically remove comments that have already been published.

Existing comments remain available unless you choose to remove them separately.

This allows you to preserve valuable discussion while preventing new comments from being submitted.

Choosing Which Content Is Affected

CC Security Essentials allows you to choose which types of content should have comments disabled.

For example, you might disable comments for:

  • Pages
  • Posts
  • Custom Post Types

This flexibility allows you to tailor the behaviour to your website rather than applying a single global setting.

How to Disable Comments

To configure comment protection:

  1. Open CC Security Essentials.
  2. Navigate to Disable Comments.
  3. Select the content types you wish to protect.
  4. Save your changes.

The new configuration takes effect immediately.

Verifying Comment Protection

After changing your settings, you can verify that comment functionality has been disabled correctly.

Verification may include confirming that:

  • comment forms are no longer displayed
  • new comments cannot be submitted
  • protected content behaves as expected

Using Verification provides greater confidence than simply enabling the setting.

What Visitors Experience

For protected content, visitors simply won’t be offered the opportunity to leave comments.

Pages continue to load normally, and all other website functionality remains unaffected.

The absence of comment forms creates a cleaner experience for websites that don’t support visitor discussions.

Troubleshooting

Comment forms are still visible

If comment forms continue to appear:

  • confirm that the correct content types have been selected
  • save your settings again
  • clear any website or browser caches
  • check whether your theme provides its own comment templates

I can still submit comments

Some plugins introduce custom commenting systems that operate independently of WordPress.

If comments remain available after enabling the protection, review any plugins that extend or replace the standard WordPress commenting system.

Existing comments are still displayed

This is expected.

Disabling comments prevents new comments from being submitted but doesn’t remove comments that already exist.

If you no longer wish to display historical comments, they can be removed separately using the standard WordPress comment management tools.

My website only needs comments on one section

That’s a common scenario.

Configure the feature so that comments remain enabled only for the content types that genuinely require visitor discussion.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does disabling comments delete existing comments?

No.

Existing comments remain available unless you choose to remove them manually.

Can I re-enable comments later?

Yes.

Simply return to the Disable Comments settings and adjust your configuration.

Does this stop comment spam?

If comments are disabled, visitors can no longer submit new comments through the standard WordPress commenting system for the protected content.

This greatly reduces the opportunity for automated comment spam on those areas of your website.

Will visitors notice any difference?

Only if they expect to leave comments.

For websites that don’t use visitor discussions, most users won’t notice any change beyond the absence of comment forms.

Best Practice

Before disabling comments, consider whether your website genuinely benefits from visitor discussion.

If comments aren’t an important part of your website:

  • Disable comments for the appropriate content types.
  • Verify that comment forms are no longer available.
  • Review existing comments and decide whether they should remain published.
  • Revisit your configuration if your website’s purpose changes in the future.

This approach keeps your website focused on the functionality it actually uses while reducing unnecessary administration.
